The determining factor wasn't the technology. It was the ecosystem around it—parent involvement, teacher adaptation, school support, and whether children were taught to be critical users of AI rather than passive consumers.

What This Means for Parents Right Now

If you're a parent trying to figure out how to handle AI tutors, the study offers guidance without prescribing one-size-fits-all solutions.

Don't ban AI tutors reflexively. For some children, especially those with learning differences, they're genuinely transformative. Denying access to tools that could help your child succeed isn't protecting them—it's limiting them.

Don't assume AI tutors are automatically beneficial. Simply having access to AI doesn't create better learners. How your child uses the tool matters more than whether they use it.

Teach critical AI usage. Help your child understand the difference between using AI to understand concepts versus using AI to complete assignments. This requires ongoing conversation, not a one-time rule.

Maintain human learning experiences. Balance AI-assisted learning with activities that require patience, sustained focus, and human interaction. Board games, reading physical books, cooking together, building things—these aren't outdated; they're essential.

Stay involved. Children with parents who understood how they were using AI and could guide that usage showed consistently better outcomes than children left to navigate AI tools alone.

The Teachers Who Are Getting It Right

The most successful teachers in the study shared common approaches.

They taught with AI, not against it. They acknowledged students had access to powerful tools and helped them understand when and how to use them effectively.

They designed assessments that required demonstrating understanding, not just providing answers. They asked students to explain their reasoning, apply concepts in new contexts, and evaluate information critically.

They used class time for what humans do best—discussion, debate, collaborative problem-solving, and grappling with complex questions that don't have single correct answers.

And they talked openly with students about AI—its capabilities, its limitations, and the skills students still needed to develop themselves.

The Question We Still Can't Answer

The children in this study are still growing up. The oldest ones are just entering high school. We won't know for years how growing up with AI tutors shapes their long-term development, career prospects, or relationship with learning.

Will the students who became highly skilled at using AI tools have an advantage in a world increasingly shaped by that technology? Or will the students who maintained strong independent thinking skills be better positioned for challenges we haven't yet imagined?

Both might be true. Or neither. Or the distinction might not matter in the ways we think it does.

What's clear is that children today are growing up in an educational landscape their parents and teachers never experienced. The rules are being written in real-time, and the consequences won't be fully visible for another decade.

AI tutors aren't going away. They're becoming more sophisticated, more accessible, and more integrated into educational systems.

Arguing whether this is good or bad is less useful than figuring out how to navigate the reality. Children will have access to AI learning tools whether we approve or not. The question is whether we'll help them use those tools wisely or leave them to figure it out alone.
